CFIS is proud to be a successful Public Private
Partnership (P3) model that achieves goals for the mutual benefit
of community and school.
These
collaborations promote the creation and dissemination of best practices
for the benefit of the broader language education community as well
as offer professional development for teachers qualified in language
education from across the province.
CURRENT INITIATIVES
SAIT
Our partnership with SAIT offers both students and teachers the opportunity to broadening their experiences in technology and applied sciences. We do this by:
- Pooling our unique expertise, facilities and experience so that CFIS curricular labs and SAIT technology can reach and support teachers qualified in language education in rural communities
- Enabling an enriched technology and applied science program at CFIS without duplicating expensive facilities
- Introducing students as young as eleven to a wider variety of technical skills and applied science as post-secondary options
- Offering the education community a working partnership model that can be expanded to the public system
- Expansion of the concept of an e-learning centre through the LEAD Program to rural Alberta teachers.
Colin B. Glassco Charitable Foundation
The Colin B. Glassco Charitable Foundation for Children was founded
by local philanthropist Colin Glassco and since 1998, has been involved
in various eye programs in Zambia, in southern Africa, aimed at
tackling preventable blindness in children.
Through a partnership with the Colin B. Glassco Charitable Foundation,
CFIS students help provide aid to villages in Africa while supplementing
their Grade 5 world area curriculum by interacting and communicating
with children in Zambia.
PENDING INITIATIVES
University of Calgary’s Language Research Centre
Partnership with University of Calgary’s Language Research Centre (LRC) promotes the creation and dissemination of best practices in language education:
- Through CFIS’s LEAD
Program, professional development outreach will be offered
to teachers qualified in language education from the public, private
and separate K-12 systems across the Province
- CFIS’s six curricular labs enable educators to experience
language in action and take new resources, techniques and approaches
back to their classrooms without having to duplicate expensive
facilities
- On-going research in language education through the LRC and
CFIS’s in-house curricular labs is the foundation for new
approaches and resources in language learning, particularly in
French and Spanish
Curricular Labs
These Curricular
Labs are a place where educators can view multi-lingual learning
in action and can take new resources, techniques and approaches
back to their classrooms without having to duplicate expensive facilities.
CFIS incorporated 6 Curricular Labs in its new facility (and 4 more
in phase 2) as step toward meeting Alberta Learning’s requirement
for a second language as part of a high school diploma.
As an active successful Public Private Partnership (P3) model,
CFIS works closely with its surrounding communities to develop programs
and services that benefit the broader community.
CURRENT INITIATIVES
City of Calgary Community & Neighbourhood
Services
Innovative joint programming like our Cougar
Summer Camp is made possible through our collaboration with
the City of Calgary Community & Neighbourhood Services to benefit
our community children.
Community
Associations
Community partners like West Springs/Cougar Ridge Community
Association have been included in the development of innovative
facilities and programming. Together, CFIS with its community partners
aim to create financially sustainable and vibrant communities.
CFIS’s playgrounds and elementary school gym and meeting
spaces are available for use by the surrounding communities, where
these facilities are at a premium. CFIS worked hard to include its
community associations in the design of these facilities and playgrounds.
Joint efforts are also continuously underway to address community
issues and concerns, such as traffic and safety on Old Banff Coach
Road and public transit services.
YWCA
CFIS's partnership with YWCA has resulted in an evening fitness
programs for the community. Other initiatives that may follow depending
on the community’s interest include English as a Second Language
(ESL) programs for the large number of new Canadians in our communities,
educational programs such as parenting, nutrition, eating disorders,
and prenatal care for the public, and community physical activity
programs including drop-in recreational sports and evening programs.
Check our website for class details.
PAST INITIATIVES
Calgary
Philharmonic Orchestra
CFIS’s music program is an integral part of our curriculum
and to support our students’ growth we have formed a relationship
with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra to bring musicians into
the school. In Spring 2005 and on March 26, 2004, the CPO, featuring
Resident Conductor, Rosemary Thompson, performed at the school.
This program offered unique opportunities for students, musicians,
and parents to learn from each other. Special thanks to Framework
Partners for making these two concerts possible.
Additionally, students are not only encouraged to learn, but also
supported the orchestra by collecting and donating books to the CPO’s
Benny the Bookworm annual used book sale. |
