What began as an eviction notice in mid 2002, turned into an $18 million state-of-the-art facility in Cougar Ridge, home for Calgary French & International School since fall 2003.
DESIGN
Calgary French & International School was designed to include
instructional spaces that could accommodate a variety of programs.
Students travel from homerooms to art rooms, from band and music
rooms to drama room and stage to science laboratories.
Economy in design and construction did not adversely impact the
concentration on functionality, durability and aesthetics. In working
hard to achieve a consistent theme to the school, the architects
added quality, natural light, and consistency that help define the
comfort of interior spaces as well as provide an excellent view
to the Bow River Valley.
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
The government has set a goal of establishing broad-band infrastructure, called
the SuperNet, linking schools and other institutions in over 400
communities across the province. This initiative has created an
opportunity for collaborative projects across disparate regions
of the province. Already connected to the SuperNet through its hallways
and classrooms, CFIS is now one of a small handful of schools in
North America that is able to work effectively with schools throughout
the province to create learning opportunities for both students
and teachers.
CFIS’s science facilities are equipped with
laboratory equipment for conducting a variety of biology, chemistry,
and physics experiments. Fume hoods above lab stations as well as
separate chemical storage rooms ensure the labs maintain safety
standards. Labs are furnished with mobile tables and can
be arranged in a variety of ways that provide flexible seating arrangements.

Over 120,000 sq. ft. of space was builtin 2003 to accommodate our growing school community, including two gymnasiums, cafeterias and libraries in addition to the many classrooms and technological features. On November
7, 2003, CFIS celebrated the official opening of its brand new
facility. Esteemed members of the community, Premier Klein,
Dr. Lyle Oberg (Minister of Learning, Karen Kryczka (MLA), and
Deputy Mayor Alderman Craig Burrows participated in commemorating
the tremendous efforts of parents, staff, students and community
partners whose vision resulted in the last 4 years of development
and construction of the new school.
