Spring Benefit FAQs

FAQs for the Spring Benefit

What is the Spring Benefit?

Held in late spring, the Spring Benefit, formerly known as the CFIS Gala, began in 2004 as a way to raise funds for the school. It has taken different forms over the years, but the common theme that has remained is that it is an engaging and active event with attendee participation in games, exciting live and silent auctions, and a wonderful environment within which to celebrate the school.

Who attends the Spring Benefit?

CFIS parents as well as grandparents, extended family and friends of CFIS students attend the Spring Benefit. Additionally, sponsor packages include tickets to the event. Last year, we also had our first table of alumni and their guests in attendance at the event.

When and where should I arrive?

The 2018 Spring Benefit will be held at the National, Westhills on Saturday May 12. The event starts at 7 p.m. and we highly recommend you arrive early.

How can I pay for games and auction winnings?

It’s recommended to have some cash on hand for games. Credit card payment is available on the tablet and we are happy to invoice you afterwards, which saves the school credit card fees. Payment by cheque and cash helps reduce revenue loss.

How are funds raised at the event?

In addition to ticket sales, which cover the cost of the event, attendees can take part in live and silent auctions, and purchase tickets to take part in the very popular Heads & Tails and Balloon Pop gala games. Stay tuned for this year’s prizes.

Where will the money from this year’s event be directed?

Two important projects are waiting for support from our community: new poured-in-place playground surfacings for both of our elementary playgrounds, and significant renovations to the two Secondary Division science labs.

Why is poured-in-place playground surfacing required?

The current playgrounds have a dusty, gravel surface. When the moisture in the gravel freezes to a certain depth, the playgrounds become unsafe for use, because the “cushion” is insufficient to protect students from injuries. In Calgary, the lengthy winter generally means that our playgrounds need to be off-limits for use for many weeks of the school year. In the 2017-18 school year, CFIS’s playground structures have been largely closed for use since November.

Why do we need renovations to our science labs?

Within our growing Secondary Division, the science labs need to undergo renovations in order for all students to benefit from being in pairs of two during their lab sessions, ensuring that they have superior and engaging hands-on lab experiences.
Science is a key component of a CFIS education, and last year, over half of our Grade 12 graduates went on to study science at universities throughout Canada and the USA.

How much are we trying to raise?

We still require approximately $100,000 to move ahead with these projects. We would like to break ground for the playground resurfacing as soon as possible this summer, so that our students can benefit as soon as they return to school. If we raise the total funds required, the science laboratories will be renovated during the summer as well.

Do you need volunteers?

Yes. We need volunteers to organize silent and live auction items as they arrive, help with centerpieces, staff tables to talk with new families about the event, and distribute auction items after the event ends. Please email to inquire about volunteering.

Can my company sponsor this event?

Yes. As in the past, sponsorships are available at a variety of price points at a variety of price point. In the past, sponsors will benefit from high visibility within the school and at the event. Sponsors range from investment firms and restaurants to media companies and orthodontists.

What types of silent auction items are needed?

Ideas for Spring Benefit auction items range from spa certificates and vacation getaways to sports memorabilia and art.

Are the “Spring Benefit parking spaces” going to be auctioned off again this year?

Yes! Each year, CFIS auctions off five reserved premiere parking spaces, for the coming school year.

Please plan ahead if you will be drinking.
