Grades 1-8 English Spelling Bee

Grades 1-8 English Spelling Bee

On March 11, students in Grades 1–8 participated in our annual English Spelling Bee, taking to the stage in the Primary Gym and the Marcel Tremblay Learning Centre to spell increasingly difficult words aloud. The event was filled with excitement as students challenged themselves round after round, showing remarkable focus, perseverance, and composure under pressure.

This year, 27 students participated in the Primary Division for Grades 1–5, and 9 students competed in the Middle School Division. Throughout the event, all participants demonstrated many attributes of the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile, including being risk-takers, using their thinking skills, and communicating with clarity and confidence.

From the youngest participants to the more experienced spellers, students demonstrated courage and confidence as they embraced the challenge in front of their peers and families. We would like to congratulate MaryAnne O. (Grade 4), Alexander W. (Grade 3), and Sareena M. (Grade 6), who will be travelling to Ottawa this summer to compete in the National Spelling Bee. MaryAnne and Alexander will also represent Alberta at the Épelle-Moi Canada French Spelling Bee national competition in Toronto this May. Congratulations as well to Lucas P. (Grade 4), Irena K. (Grade 6), Sophia W. (Grade 2), and MaryGrace O. (Grade 2), who will represent CFIS at the televised Spelling Bee hosted at Webber Academy in Calgary this June.

The Spelling Bee was a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase not only their spelling skills, but also the IB Learner Profile trait of being risk-takers. We are proud of all who participated and grateful to everyone who came out to support and cheer on our spellers.
