As part of CFIS’s global programs, students ventured on a nine-day cultural and educational journey across Spain, with the main event being a Round Square Global Conference in Madrid, which gathered nearly 200 participants from 15+ countries. These experiences are designed to foster global citizenship, cultivate cross-cultural understanding, and encourage students to engage deeply with the world around them. Students were also able to engage their Spanish language skills in an immersive way.
From Barcelona’s iconic landmarks to Madrid’s vibrant streets, the group explored Spain’s rich history, diverse culture, and innovative approaches to urban living.
- Highlights in Barcelona:
Students kicked off their adventure by marveling at the architectural masterpiece, La Sagrada Familia, and strolling along the Mediterranean beaches.- Reflection: “Walking by the sea and watching the waves was so calming—it gave me a moment to take it all in.” – Sarah
They also dove into Spanish cuisine, trying tapas and churros, and began contemplating how Spain’s culture compared to their own, framing the questions they would explore throughout the trip:
- Key Question: “How can we apply what we learn about Spanish transportation systems to improve quality of life in Calgary?”
- Real Madrid and the Round Square Connection:
In Madrid, the students toured Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, home to Real Madrid, with a Round Square partner school from Brazil.- Highlight: “As a soccer fan, standing where legends play was unforgettable. Tiago’s excitement was contagious!” – Gavin
During the Round Square conference hosted by SEK School in Madrid, students formed connections with peers from around the globe, including new friends from Namibia, India, Peru and beyond. The conference included lively cultural exchanges, such as a flamenco performance, and engaging activities at the mountain camp of San Mames.
- Student Reflection: “It’s amazing to meet people from all over the world and see how much we have in common, even with such different backgrounds.” – Gavin
- Exploring Madrid’s Cultural Riches:
Students explored the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, and El Sobrino de Botín—the world’s oldest restaurant—while reflecting on Spain’s historical significance. A walking tour highlighted the city’s architectural beauty and the role of urban design in shaping daily life.- Memorable Moment: “The Royal Palace is like stepping into a storybook. I can’t believe it has over 3,000 rooms!” – Nicolas
- Culinary Adventures in the Mountains:
At a rustic mountain camp, students hiked, played games, and tasted artisanal goat cheese from a local quesería.- Highlight: “The cheese was some of the best I’ve ever had—it was rich, creamy, and unforgettable.” – Ayden
As the journey came to a close, students reflected on the lessons they would take home, from the importance of sustainability to the value of stepping outside their comfort zones to build global friendships.
Thank you to everyone who supported this enriching experience for our students. A special shout-out to Señor Mondaca for his incredible leadership and enthusiasm throughout the trip!
