Exploring Art, Culture, and Identity Across Continents

Exploring Art, Culture, and Identity Across Continents

Our Round Square club hosted a virtual discussion on April 30th, welcoming students from South Africa, India, Kenya and Peru. In addition to presenting about Canadian arts and culture,  our students prepared questions for breakout room conversations around the deep and dynamic connection between art, culture, and diversity. Aimed at participants aged 13 to 15, the session celebrated the role of creativity in expressing identity, telling stories, and bridging cultures across the world. Through interactive activities and guided conversations, students reflected on the meaning of art and culture in their lives and how both evolve over time and place.

Activities include icebreakers and sharing personal examples of cultural art. Students explored questions such as: What defines art and culture? How do they influence each other? How does globalization affect artistic expression? Can videogames be considered art?

Ultimately, the session encouraged young people to appreciate the diverse voices and artistic traditions that shape our global community. By reflecting on both personal and cultural experiences, the discussion fosters understanding, creativity, and a greater awareness of the power of art to inspire and connect.

Congratulations to our student leaders for being brilliant hosts, Hana D., (‘31), Sophie R. (‘31), Sebastian C. (‘30), Elle B. (‘31), Anika R. (‘30), Ziya K. (‘30) and to their High School mentor, Martine J. (‘26) for her excellent work in building the skills and abilities of our younger students to engage in this activity.
