NYC Adventure: A Journey Through History, Art, & Culture

***

Our Grade 9 students spent an exciting six days exploring New York City, filled with unforgettable experiences and new learnings. Here's a quick look at their adventure in the Big Apple!

Arrival and First Impressions
After an early flight, students arrived in New York and immediately dove into the city's vibrant energy. In Brooklyn, they visited Dumbo, where they marveled at the stunning skyline under the Manhattan Bridge. "The city smells like everything—hot dogs, pretzels, you name it," said one student. They quickly learned that New York isn’t just a city for the eyes, but for all the senses.

History and Landmarks
The group spent time in Lower Manhattan, exploring Wall Street and the 9/11 Memorial, reflecting on the tragic events and seeing the towering Freedom Tower. "I had no idea Wall Street was once a canal!" shared a student. The students also took a boat ride to see the Statue of Liberty up close. Later, they visited fellow Round Square school Nightingale Bamford, where they had lunch with local students and experienced classroom life.

Art and Creativity
A focus on creativity took them to Brooklyn’s street art scene, where they met local artist Leaf and created their own graffiti pieces. "I didn’t think I could do it, but I was so proud of my piece!" one student shared. Later, they explored MoMA PS1, a museum housed in a former school, where they discussed contemporary art and its diverse meanings.

Immigration and Reflection
The group visited the Tenement Museum, where they learned about the struggles and perseverance of immigrant families in the early 1900s. “The way they lived and worked was so humbling,” reflected one student. The day included a peaceful walk on the High Line, a transformed rail line now filled with art and greenery, a perfect contrast to the city's energy.

Innovation and Views
On the final day, students met Isa Lee, a local entrepreneur who shared the inspiring story of how she grew her business, Forsyth Fire Escape. "She proved that hard work really pays off," said a student. The trip concluded with a visit to The Edge, where students experienced the breathtaking views from one of New York’s tallest observation decks.

Final Reflections
This trip was more than just sightseeing; it was an opportunity for students to connect with the history, art, and innovation that make New York City unique. "I learned so much about the city and about myself," shared one student. From the hustle of Wall Street to the peaceful streets of Brooklyn, students returned home with lasting memories and valuable lessons.
