This school year, four of our Upper School students are engaging in individual exchanges through the Round Square network. These exchanges are typically 4-6 weeks in length, and can be transformational for our students. One of the most transformative aspects of a cultural exchange is the opportunity to engage in relational learning—learning that happens through meaningful connections with others. This deep, personal approach to learning helps young people grow into more compassionate, adaptable, and globally minded individuals.
This year, Emma F. (‘27) embarked on a 4 week adventure in Denmark, Kale L. (‘27) is currently exploring Germany, and Roman L. (‘28) and Martine J. (‘26) are heading down under this summer in Australia.
Exchanges also contribute immensely to the school culture by allowing CFIS students to interact with and engage with students from around the world. Over the time that they are here, our exchange students integrate into classroom activities and extracurriculars, and form lifelong bonds.
Here’s what George, one of our exchange students from Australia, had to say:
The flight over I was optimistic about the coming weeks in Canada. I’ve spent weeks planning with Roman and my family on the time to see Canada at its best: a time when there’s still snow on the ground and the sun makes its daily appearance. This is exactly what I got. My time in Canada has been an experience to remember forever. My favourite part of my exchange trip was skiing down the Canadian slopes for the first time. I have also loved the school and the friends I have made here. From sitting in the library, to having a laugh in Maths class: these have all contributed to an amazing trip. The Legault family has provided me with endless opportunities to make the most of the short time I was here. It’s not a Canadian experience without having watched a hockey match: we drove to the Saddledome and saw the Flames smash the Ducks 4 to 1. This sparked my ever-loving support for the Calgary Flames. I know 4 weeks might feel like a long time for some people, but I think my time has flown since landing in Canada. Overall, Canada has been an amazing country to visit with loads of exciting opportunities awaiting. I have enjoyed every second of my stay and will without a doubt do it again.
Some of the benefits of this experience that our intrepid travellers have gained include:
1. Personal Growth & Self-Confidence
Living abroad helps you become more independent, self-aware, and confident as you adapt to new situations and navigate unfamiliar environments.
2. Make Lifelong Friends
By connecting with host families, classmates, and local peers, you form deep friendships that often last a lifetime.
3. Embrace Cultural Differences
Immersing yourself in a different culture fosters empathy, tolerance, and a genuine appreciation for diversity. Living in a different culture sharpens your awareness of your own, helping you see both with a fresh perspective. You learn to navigate differences with respect and sensitivity.
4. Improve Language Skills
Speaking a new language daily helps you achieve fluency faster and understand cultural nuances more deeply.
5. Academic Growth
You gain exposure to different education systems and teaching styles, broadening your academic perspective.
6. Finding New Interests
Cultural exchange exposes you to new sports, foods, traditions, and activities—some of which may become lifelong passions or influence your future goals.
7. See the World
You’ll explore places most tourists never see and develop a deeper, more personal connection to the world beyond your own borders.
